Black Ice Causes Accidents Throughout Tulsa

Posted on behalf of Edwards Law Firm on Dec 19, 2016 in Auto Accidents

winter accidentBlack ice formed by the recent winter weather caused 15 car accidents to occur within an hour on Dec. 14 within Tulsa, Okla., and the surrounding interstates.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), the accidents that occurred along Interstates 244 and 44 injured seven people that required further treatment.

Black ice can be difficult for drivers to spot and creates hidden dangers in the road. The slick conditions caused by the ice makes it difficult for drivers to maintain control of their vehicles. It also poses a challenge for emergency responders, as two ambulances were struck by sliding vehicles while trying to reach an accident scene along I-244.

With winter conditions worsening, the OHP and AAA are advising drivers to take precautions and be aware of black ice, which is often difficult to see and looks like road pavement due to its transparent properties.

AAA recommends the following safety procedures to preventing a black ice accident:

  • Pay attention to temperature readings, which will help detect the possibility of black ice.
  • Check temperature sensors located behind the front bumper of the vehicle to make sure they are not obstructed, as this might give off false readings.
  • Be aware that precipitation and freezing temperatures can cause overpasses and bridges to form ice.
  • Exercise caution and drive slower when temperatures are low. Black ice is most likely to form at dawn and late in the evening when temperatures are at their lowest.
  • Refrain from using your breaks if you encounter black ice. Instead, focus on keeping your wheel steady.
  • Keep your foot off the gas pedal and do not overcorrect your steering if you begin to slide on black ice.
