A tractor-trailer carrying a load of explosives collided with a vehicle early Wednesday morning on U.S. 271 near Hugo, Oklahoma.
The semi was turning northbound from a truck stop when its rear tires were struck by a vehicle driven by s 21-year-old of Enid.
The military-grade explosives were being taken to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant at the time of the collision. The explosives consisted of large shells, and some spilled out of the trailer and onto the highway. Luckily, none of the explosives detonated during the crash.
Highway 271 was shut down for several hours as officials from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and a bomb squad from Fort Sill worked to make sure that the situation remained stable. Local schools were delayed to accommodate the highway closure, and a detour was opened around the scene.
The driver of the semi, a 61-year-old from Arkansas was uninjured in the crash. However, the driver who struck the back of the truck, was flown to a Plano hospital with injuries to her legs.
